Gabbar’s New Look
After years (not just months) of speculation, Ram Gopal Varma’s Sholay finally went on floors this week. The man seems hell-bent to prove his detractors wrong. And with Sholay, what one looks up to the most is Gabbar Singh – Indian cinema’s most popular screen villains, especially when Amitabh Bachchan plays the part!

Special Chat with new Gabbar – Amitabh Bachchan

The look of Gabbar Singh in one of the biggest act of remakes in Indian cinema is already generating a lot of excitement. And the suspense behind this look was unveiled at a grand party planned by Adlabs on Saturday, October 7, at Le Meridian, Mumbai.

According to Ramu, the legendary one-liners that Gabbar mouthed could only be repeated by one actor. “And that is Amitabh Bachchan. I firmly believe that.”

He laughs while recounting his conversation with the Big B. “At first he was taken aback. ‘Me as Gabbar Singh?’ Then the challenge of it sank in. I explained to him what my take on Gabbar would be, and how I intend to project the character in my film. Now he is as excited as I am.”

This will not be the first time AB is venturing into the dark side. Way back in Parwana he played a desperate lover who shoots down the father of the girl he loves. More recently, he played diabolic characters in Aks and Aankhen. Even the roles in Deewaar and Agneepath had shades of grey.

Reaction upon new Sholay

Some people believe movies like Sholay canoot and must not be remade. Its masterpiece in itself and must not be modified or altered in any way, which might eventually detoriete even the original. Prominent stars like Jaya Bachchan & Hema Malini, who were incidently part of the old classic, themselves think there can never be another Sholay.
