Calcutta based Amit Roy witnesses a dance artiste by the name of Rekha, and is smitten by her beauty and talent, so much so that he approaches her parents to ask for her hand in marriage. Rekha’s parents are happy to get their daughter married to such a suitable young man, and soon the marriage takes place. After the marriage, Amit finds out that he is not the ideal man for Rekha, and both make compromises and continue living with each other. Soon, a son, Sumit, is born and it appears that Rekha is now destined to live the life of a middle-class housewife. Then U.S. returned Ronjit Malik enters their lives, and nothing seems the same any more for Rekha. Ronjit becomes a frequent visitor to their house, and he even proposes that Rekha continue on with her dancing and even act in movies. All four decide to travel to Bombay to further her career. This journey ends tragically, as a drunken Amit falls from the train, resulting in his death. With nothing to hold her back, Rekha admits Sumit in a boarding school in distant Darjeeling and embarks with Ronjit on a career that she had always dreamed about. She does meet with considerable success and goes on to be the reigning leading actress of Bengali cinema. Then a producer, Sanyal, introduces her to Naresh Dutt, a Bombay-based financier, who would like her to act in his movie titled “Do Anjaane”, to which Rekha agrees. Then a series of events follow which lead both Rekha and Ronjit to question whether Amit is really dead or has his restless ghost come to haunt them.
