Yash Raj’s Final Trump Cards: 3 Aces
After debacle of Gen ‘Y’ Films like Luv Ka The End and Mujhse Fraandship Karoge Yash Raj is playing its final trump cards. According to the inside sources, the company will declare bankruptcy if its future line up projects fail. In past decade, especially after 2007 Yash Raj had churn out more disasters than a hit. The huge difference of Flop:Hit ratio (i.e. ard 4:1) have caused even loyal financers to take their hands off from their future projects. After releasing 4-5 flops a year, Yash Raj have finally been limited to release 2-3 movies a year due to lack of investors, though they claim its their strategy to only make good movies.
Their sub-division ‘Y Films’ focusing on youth centric movies have also almost stopped working on new projects due to lack of proper funding and failure of Luv Ka The End and Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge.
Currently, Yash is investing almost all of their money in three major movies with top three stars of Bollywood; Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan. As per the reports, these 3 Aces of Bollywood are burning Yash Raj pockets deep just with their remuneration.
Salman has reportedly charged Rs. 40 Crore plus 10% profit from his forthcoming movie Ek Tha Tiger, produced by Yash Raj Films. The total production cost of the movie directed by Kabir Khan has already surpassed Rs. 90 Crore budget (including remuneration of the cast and crew), while marketing and post production cost will add up another 10-20 Crore. Financers investing on Yash Raj Films have already raised their doubts regarding recovery of their investment after Ra.One’s disappointing performance in the box office.
Aamir on the other hand has charged an undisclosed amount plus huge chunk of profit share from Yash Raj’s forthcoming movie – Dhoom 3. The Dhoom franchise has always been about the anti-hero (or so called Villain) than the hero. According to reliable sources, he has charged no less than 20 Crore plus 40% of the profit made by the movie. Interestingly, looking the recent Yash Raj Films failures, Aamir has cleverly included a strange clause of insurance. If the movie fails, Yash Raj Films will still have to pay Rs. 25 Crore on top of 20 Crore base remuneration. Yash Raj Films is completely banking on this movie as Dhoom franchise has always got bigger in terms of financial return and its cinematic experience.
So, for just remuneration of 3 Khans, Yash Raj Films is paying ard. 140 Crore plus including production cost, marketing, etc Yash Raj’s final three trump cards cost nothing less than Rs. 350 Crore.
What if these movies get reception like Ra.One or bad like Kites ?
