The Twists & Turns Impress – 3.0/5.0
Abhishek, Sonam, Neil Mukesh, Bobby Deol? Well, that line up is good enough to put you off at any point of time. But, Abbas Mustan, the veteran Bollywood director duo, took the risk, even at the cost of alienating their own fans. And then i have seen the The Italian Job, from which the movie is suppsedly INSPIRED, atleast twice. So it took me a while to convince myself to head to the theater.
But, for your information, Abbas Mastan’s Players is quite different from the Hollywood movie ‘The Italian Job’. Yes, the basic plot concept remains the same. But what makes Players click, despite having a barrage of flop actors like Abhishek Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bobby Deol together, is that the film managed to surprise me with good twists and turns. Yes, I’ll admit that I’m a big fan of Abbas-Mastan films, and they really didn’t let me down this time too.
Is the film awesome? NO, of course not. but it is a pretty good thriller by Bollywood standards, i would say. The director duo made a very good attempt with the heist genre, which is very rarely attempted in Indian movies.
Individual performances are OK; liked Neil Mukesh particulary. Sonam, Abhishek are just watchable. What makes the difference is the technical prowess of the movie. Slick styles, razor sharp editing, crisp story telling complimented well with a lovely background score.
YES, you may still raise your eyebrows, but Players is worth your time and money!
