Shahrukh will always be part of my system: Karan Johar
As Karan Johar joins hands with Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap for their upcoming joint venture Bombay Talkies, the director mentions why he never cast his lucky charm Shahrukh Khan.
“Shahrukh Khan will always be a part of my system. He’s part of my film making and he will always be. When you see my film, it’s very true to its characters and very true to its world. I love Shahrukh Khan and working with him is an honour and pleasure always. But there has to be a place, space, time and story for him. I’m just hoping to make a film that feels different,” says Karan.
A unique thing for Bollywood, Karan talks about his collaboration with the others, “It’s very rare that such great directors come together and through our stories, we hope to bring out our passion for film making. It’s too bad for the others who turned down the idea of making such a film. They are going to feel really bad.”
Talking about the length of the film, Karan also adds that it has been a challenge. “Brevity is not my strength at all. My films are long, the processes are long. I’m very long winded about everything. It’s been a traumatic experience until I went on sets. And I just did what I had to. Plus, each one of us was given a budget of 1.5 crores. I had to really love what I was doing and which I did. Those nine days of shoot were very special for me.”
Bombay Talkies has been made with the pure intention of celebrating 100 years of cinema. However, it neither sums the 100 years nor is it a documentary film, as largely believed by many.
