A secret behind Jiah Khan’s suicide
Investigation into actor Jiah Khan’s suicide met with the first hurdle when police found the message box of her boyfriend Suraj Pancholi’s cell phone empty. Retrieval of messages from Jiah’s phones before she hanged herself after an argument with Suraj is also proving to be slow-going as most of them are password-locked.
On Wednesday morning, Suraj, 22, his father Aditya Pancholi and sister Sana briefly visited the Sagar Sangeet building in Juhu where 25-year-old Jiah, whose real name was Nafisa Khan, committed suicide. They then accompanied the funeral procession to the Santa Cruz cemetery. A source close to the Pancholis said: “Suraj wanted to see Jiah before she makes her last journey. So the family first went home and then accompanied them to the kabrastan.”
A close friend of Jiah’s mother Rabiya said she was upset as she felt it was not the right time for them to visit, not so soon after what had happened to Jiah. The police are examining Jiah’s last calls and texts carefully to find out what drove her to suicide. They have managed to open the SMS inbox of one of her mobiles, in which Suraj sent a message just before Jiah killed herself, saying in abusive language that she had made his “life a prison” by “spying on him”.
They have found out that a few months ago, Jiah slit her wrist in a bid to commit suicide and called Suraj. He was at Worli at that point and called a friend to help Jiah. That friend attended to Jiah and ensured her treatment. At this time, Suraj called Jiah’s mother Rabiya in London and asked her to stay with her daughter after explaining about the attempted suicide. Rabiya came to Mumbai and had been staying with her daughter since, said the police.
On Wednesday, Aditya Pancholi and his two children — Suraj and Sana — attended Jiah’s funeral. “The day the incident happened, I was worried about my child but later realized what the other family must be going through — Rabiya and Jiah were like buddies and two sisters. It is an irreparable loss to the family,” he said. “Suraj is completely shattered and is not in a state of mind to talk to anyone. He is in a state of shock and disbelief.”
On Monday night, before Jiah hung herself from a ceiling fan, she had an argument with Suraj. Explaining the sequence of events, a friend of the family said Jiah wanted to meet Suraj on Monday to apparently share with him that she had signed some films. Suraj asked her to give him some time and promised to meet a day later. They had just spent the weekend together. Suraj asked his domestic help to buy a bouquet of lilies and drop it at Jiah’s house with a message wishing her luck.
But Jiah kept on insisting that he come and spend time with her. At one point, she asked him where he was. Suraj told her where he was with friends and said he was waiting for Nita (name changed). “Nita is a family jeweller and Suraj had given her a chain to polish and was supposed to pay her Rs 16,000,” said the source.
Jiah immediately called up Nita and asked her if she was meeting Suraj. She said she was meeting him next morning. Jiah got upset and told Suraj he was lying to her and meeting another girl. They had an argument and after some time Jiah committed suicide.
“There was a confusion of am and pm in the message Nita sent Suraj,” clarified Aditya.
