Salman Khan’s silver jubilee in Bollywood
Salman’s first film, Biwi Ho Toh Aisi, released on August 22, 1988. The film, a family drama, starred Rekha and Farooq Shaikh with Salman in the role of Mr Shaikh’s younger brother. Salman’s voice in the film was dubbed by someone else.
Biwi Ho Toh Aisi flopped but in December 1989, Salman starred as the male lead in Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyar Kiya. Co-starring TV actress Bhagyashree, Maine Pyar Kiya was a blockbuster hit and propelled Salman into the heady heights of stardom.
In the 25 years since Biwi Ho Toh Aisi, Salman’s career graph has oscillated between box office duds like Sanam Bewafa, Love and Veer; critical successes like Saajan, Khamoshi, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Tere Naam; and superhits like Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Hum Saath Saath Hain, Biwi No. 1, Partner and his recent run of five back-to-back blockbusters – Dabangg, Ready, Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2.
While Bollywood’s best-known bachelor may be hard to pin down when it comes to marriage talk, 25 years have also seen a string of high-profile romances, notably with actresses Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif.
The two-and-a-half decades of fame have also brought Salman no small measure of notoriety. He is currently standing trial for a hit-and-run case dating from 2002. He is also charged with illegally hunting the endangered chinkara and blackbuck deer while shooting Hum Saath Saath Hain in 1998 in Rajasthan.
As he celebrates his silver jubilee in Bollywood, Salman has his hands full with projects such as Kick, Mental and No Entry Mein Entry.
