Iconic Bengali Actress Suchitra Sen Passes Away

Iconic Bengali actress Suchitra Sen, under treatment in the critical care unit (CCU) of a nursing home in Kolkatta expired early in the morning today at around around 8:25 am due to heart attack in Kolkata. She was 82.

Suchitra Sen has been battling for life for a long time now. Suchitra Sen was admitted in to Belle Vue Clinic on December 23 with severe lung infection. At that time, Sen’s breathing problem has increased leading to dipping of her oxygen saturation and thus necessitating the ventilator support. Suchitra Sen began her career with the Bengali film Shesh Kothay in 1952 and is known for her role in Bimal Roy’s Devdas (1955) and Aandhi (1975).

Suchitra Sen was also the first Indian actress to be awarded at an international film festival – Best Actress award for Saptapadi at the Moscow film festival in 1963. After her film Pronoy Pasha (1978) flopped, she stopped acting or making public appearances. She even refused the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005 since she did not want to make any public appearances. Since her retirement, she has been living a reclusive life and only meets her daughter actress Moon Moon Sen, granddaughters Raima and Riya Sen, and a handful of others.
