Andaz Apna Apna: Lesser known facts!
Andaz Apna Apna is one of the cult classics of Indian cinema that is loved by one and all. Today, the film completes 20 years as it was released in April 1994. Each scene and dialogue from this film has become iconic. From intellectuals to the masses, everybody loved Aamir Khan and Salman Khan in this film. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, this comedy film also starred Raveena Tandon, Karisma Kapoor and Paresh Rawal in the lead roles. If this film is one of your favourties, read on to find out facts that you did not know.
The film took three years to make and completes 20 years this year ( in April 2014). Lead actors Aamir Khan and Salman Khan wanted more screen space than the other but finally agreed to have the same amount of screen time. Andaz Apna Apna was said to have done well in Mumbai, but in other regions and territories it flopped despite the fact that it had two major stars like Salman Khan who had a blockbuster hit to his name (Maine Pyaar Kiya) and Aamir Khan who too had successful films like Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Dil to his credit. Expressing his views on the same, Actor Aamir Khan in an interview to Hindustan Times mentioned that the film was publicised for only three days. He further added that the distributors weren’t sure about getting the delivery of the film in spite of the release date being announced. Hence, no posters regarding the film were put up because they were worried if they didn’t have the prints and put up the poster, the public would kill them. The film makes references to Salman and Aamir’s previous works. When Aamir Khan is inaugurating the prison by cutting a ribbon, in the background the song ‘Papa Kehte Hain’ from the film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak is playing. Andaz Apna Apna also makes references to many films including Dilip Kumar’s Ram aur Shyam and Seeta aur Geeta. When Salman’s character Prem finds out that Uncle and Teja are twins, he says it’s like the film Seeta aur Geeta and Aamir’s character Amar corrects him saying that it’s like the film Ram aur Shyam and not Seeta aur Geeta. Interestingly, the Hema Malini super hit starrer Seeta aur Geeta was inspired or rather, was another version of Ram aur Shyam which in itself was a remake of a South film. Salman’s name as Prem had become popular with Maine Pyaar Kiya and he carried it forward in Andaz Apna Apna too.
Although the film had big stars like Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor, none of the stars were really on talking terms. Raveena Tandon recently tweeted, “..really wonder how the film got made. no one was talking to any one But still we all had fun doing each scene and so difficult to control our own laughter during takes..great memories”. Further adding, “Unknown facts about Andaz Apna Apna! Amir played maximum pranks, Salman did awesome scenes also gave many gaalis,Lolo n I sulked!Raj was hilarious and also in love, producer broke”. Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar did the mahurat of the film.
In the film, Shakti Kapoor’s name has the S striked out and is spelt with a T, thus making it Thakti. This is because Shakti’s character Crime Master Gogo cannot say S. He replaces S with T. Thus instead of saying Namaste his character says Namate. Further, his character Crime Master Gogo is said to be the nephew of the great Indian villain Mogambo essayed by the late Amrish Puri in the film Mr. India. Aamir Khan and Rishi Kapoor discussed the production of Andaz Apna Apna in a dialogue they have in the film Damini which released 1993. Actor Jagdeep who plays the character Bankeylal Bhopali in the film has earlier played the role of Bhjopali in films like Soorma Bhopali and Sholay.
