Bajirao Mastani is not just a film, it is an experience: Deepika Padukone
Deepika Padukone is a trained Bharata Natyam dancer but for Bajirao Mastani, the actress had to undergo rigorous training in Kathak and one of the experiences she would cherish forever is working under the tutelage of Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj, who choreographed Deepika in a solo act on the contemporary adaptation of one of his own performances set on an Avadhi Brijwasi thumri, “Balma re chunaria maiko lal” which is the actress’s favourite. “Both, Bharata Natyam and Kathak are completely different schools of dance. It was like unlearning one for the other and I was totally mesmerised with Pandit Birju Maharaj’s moves,” said Deepika. The maestro, who has worked with the likes of Waheeda Rahman, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya among others was recently quoted saying, “Deepika quickly mastered the footwork when she came for riyaaz to Delhi.”
Says Deepika, “This is not a film, it is an experience. The first time when you watch…visually it is so compelling that you won’t be able to focus on anything else. You would want to appreciate and enjoy that first and then you may go for the second time to watch the film,” Some time back Deepika shifted to a five-star hotel close to the studio so that she didn’t waste time and energy in travelling and is able to get into the Mastani‘s character faster. “I live quite far, at Prabhadevi, it was difficult travelling every day. So I moved to a hotel close by. It is so much convenient now. I finish off my workout in the morning at around 7-7.30am and then come for the shoot,” said the dimpled beauty.
