Bollywood Diva Sridevi Passes Away In Dubai Due To Massive Heart Attack

srideviVeteran Bollywood actor and Padma Shri awardee Sridevi, who had an illustrious career spanning over four decades, passed away. She was 54.

Sridevi, died late in the night reportedly due to cardiac arrest in Dubai, where she had gone along with her family to attend her nephew Mohit Marwah’s wedding. Confirming the news, a source close to the family said, “Yes it’s true. She was in Dubai while some of the other family members came back to India. We hear it’s cardiac arrest.”

While some of her family members returned from Dubai after the wedding, Sridevi, Boney and her younger daughter Khushi stayed back. Her elder daughter Janhvi did not accompany the family due to her shooting schedule.

A versatile actor, Sridevi made her Bollywood debut in 1978 with “Solva Sawan”.

But it was only after five years with Jeetendra-starrer “Himmatwala” that she gained commercial success. Her beguiling eyes, scintillating screen presence and acting prowess soon made her one of the most sought-after artistes in the Hindi film industry.

In an impressive career, spanning five-decades, the actor ruled the commercial cinema space in the ’80s and ’90s like no heroine had done before. In an industry dominated by male superstars, Sridevi reversed the trend by her sheer acting prowess. Her name, most of the times, was a guarantee enough for a film’s success.

An extremely shy person in real life, Sridevi came alive in front of the cameras, playing a variety of roles. Such was her popularity that her style and dance moves would be copied by her fans country over. She was ‘Miss Hawa Hawaaii’ and ‘Chandni’ for them. Sridevi started acting at the age of four and made her debut with M A Thirumugham’s “Thunaivan”. She continued acting in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada films but it was her career in Bollywood that made her a household name in the country.

She made her Bollywood debut as a child artiste in 1975 hit “Julie” but continued ruling the South Indian film industry where she established herself as a leading heroine with films such as “16 Vayathinile”, “Sigappu Rojakkal”, “Meendum Kokila” and “Moondram Pirai”.

In Bollywood, she made her debut in 1978 as a lead actor in “Solva Sawan”.

She gained commercial success with the 1983 film “Himmatwala” opposite Jeetendra, which also established her as one of the best dancers in cinema. She was grace-personified dressed as an apsara (a celestial beauty in Hindu mythology) performing on the hit track ‘Nainon mein sapna’.

The year 1983 also saw Sridevi give stellar performances in both critically acclaimed and box-office hits such as “Sadma”, where she played the role of a woman who loses her memory. Both she and actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan played the roles in the Hindi remake of their 1982 Tamil movie, “Moondram Pirai”. The climax of the heart-wrenching movie was deemed as poetic as the entire plot, with the song ‘Ae zindagi gale laga le’ as an ode to the philosophy of uncertainty in life.

Sridevi followed it up with a number of commercial hits such as “Mawaali”, “Tohfa”, “Masterji” and “Nazrana”. In 1987 came Shekhar Kapur’s “Mr India”, a film which was produced by her future husband Boney Kapoor.

Sridevi gave a memorable performance as crime reporter Seema Sohni. She was one of the few female actors who left the audience spellbound with both her comic timing and sensuality. How her undercover scribe transformed into Ms Hawa Hawaaii, thanks to her dancing skills in one of the popular songs, is one of the most memorable scenes of the film. Those expressive eyes and the mischievous smile sent hearts aquiver and lit up the cinema screens, making Sridevi Bollywood’s first female superstar.

Owing to the cult status the song went on to achieve, the Kavita Krishnamurthy number has been recreated a number of times in films such as “Shaitan” and most recently in Vidya Balan’s “Tumhari Sulu”. And so will ‘Kaate nahi kat-te’, an iconic sultry number which saw the actor romance an invisible man in a song revelling in a never-before-seen boldness and fantasy.

Filmmaker Yash Chopra cast her in the title role of “Chandni” in the 1989 film, another iconic film of her career. Such was her performance in the film that fans came to recognise her with the name of Chandni. Impressed with her performance in the film, Chopra cast her again in “Lamhe” in a dual role, where she played the mother and the daughter. It did not do well at the box office at that time but has come to be known one the best films of Sridevi, Chopra and Anil Kapoor’s careers. The film was said to be ahead of its times as it dealt with a woman falling for an older man who is in love with her dead mother.

Her other major box office hits of the era were “Chaalbaaz”, where she played the role of twins, “Nagina”, and “Khuda Gawah” opposite Amitabh Bachchan.

Her pairing with Anil Kapoor, her “Mr India” co-star and brother-in-law, was particularly successful and she would work with him again in “Laadla” and “Judaai”. After “Judaai”, Sridevi took a break from acting to focus on her marriage with Boney Kapoor. She had two daughters — Janhvi and Khushi — with Kapoor.

She went on a hiatus for 15 years after starring in home production — “Judaai” — co-starring her brother-in-law Anil Kapoor and Urmila Matondkar. It was director Gauri Shinde’s “English Vinglish” in 2012 that marked Sridevi’s comeback.

Her nuanced performance as a middle-class woman, learning to speak English to feel accepted by her family, won accolades, and the film was also a commercial success.

Last year, she was seen in revenge-drama — “Mom” — opposite Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna. She shot for a special appearance in superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film — “Zero” — which releases in December.

But by the time she made her entry into Bollywood, the actor was a known face in South Indian films. She made her debut in Tamil films as a child artiste with “Thunaivan” in 1969. As an adult, she debuted in Tamil cinema in late 70s. She also worked in Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada films.

Besides Boney and Khushi, she is survived by older daughter Janhvi Kapoor, who is currently working towards making her entry into the Hindi cinema. Sridevi was step-mother to actor Arjun Kapoor and his sister Anshula, who Boney had from late first wife Mona.

The actor’s elder daughter Janhvi is on the cusp of her own cinematic journey with “Dhadak”, a remake of the Marathi blockbuster “Sairat”. Unfortunately, Sridevi will not be there to witness it.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit paid his condolences to the family and said, ‘Whatever movies she did, her performances were unmatched. My heartfelt condolences to her family. The entire industry is in ‘Sadma’ by hearing this news.’

Veteran actor Ranjeet said the ‘Chandni’ of Bollywood was ‘a humble and beautiful lady.’

‘Unbelievable. She was a humble and beautiful lady. She was an amazing artist who had the ability to convey everything through her eyes. It feels like we are all in an airport departure lounge waiting for our announcements,’ the 71-year-old told ANI.

Actor Annu Kapoor said he wanted to accept the news of Sridevi’s demise as a ‘rumour’.

‘I wanted to accept it as a rumour, but in the end it was a reality. Wherever she is, may her soul rest in peace. Our prayers are with her family. Nation mourns, she was a heartthrob for cinema lovers. We will always remember her,’ Kapoor said.

Inarguably, Sridevi was the first pan-India female superstar to rule the 1980s. Actor Vidya Balan, for whose recent release “Tumhari Sulu” Sridevi’s hit number “Hawa Hawaaii” was recreated, wrote on social media: “My inspiration is no more…”

Hrithik wrote Sridevi was an admiration for him as a child actor, who gave his first acting shot in film “Bhagwaan Dada” (1986). “I loved her, admired her so much. My first ever acting shot was with Sridevi, I was nervous in front of her and I remember her shaking her hands pretending to be nervous cause of me just to boost my confidence. We had to laugh, and she kept laughing until I got it right. Will miss you mam,” he posted a still from the film with the actor.

Actor Chiranjeevi in a video message said, “The sudden demise of Sridevi is very sad for the Indian film industry. I extend my deep felt condolences to her family members. “She was a great actor and she will live forever in the hearts of her fans and her memories shall live as long as the film industry lives,” he said. “She dedicated her life for the art,” said Chiranjeevi, who acted opposite Sridevi in the 1990 blockbuster film “Jagadeka Veerudu Athiloka Sundari”.

Sridevi’s “Chaalbaaz” co-star Sunny Deol wrote a heartfelt dedication to the actor on social media. “The moment the camera rolled SHREE would light up the floor… We did a few films together and I enjoyed working with her though we rarely spoke. I am going to miss her,” Sunny tweeted alongside a photograph of the legend.

Actor Mohit Marwah, Sridevi’s nephew for whose wedding the actor had gone to Dubai, took to Instagram to pay his respects to the actor. “You were more than a legend. Your vacuum will always be felt,” he wrote alongside a picture.

Director-producer Karan Johar recalled having a fan moment when he first met the superstar on the sets of his father’s film “Gumrah”. “Every time I met her I had a star-struck moment and a fanboy vibe… I don’t think I can believe it… Perhaps I don’t think I want to believe that she is no more… She is a huge reason I love the movies… I feel like Indian cinema just lost its smile… The heavens are fortunate they just inherited a gift of life… Heartbroken…” he wrote on Instagram.

From ‘Sadma’ to ‘Chaalbaaz’, from ‘Mr India’ to ‘Chandni’, it was impossible to take your eyes off her when she appeared on screen. A true star. A gifted actor. A woman with tremendous dignity. Gone too soon. RIP Sridevi. Sad sad day,” he wrote on Instagram.
