Kiran would be presenting writer-director Anand Gandhi’s upcoming film ‘Ship Of Theseus’.

“Aamir liked the film and we did take suggestions from him from him from time-to-time. He is like an outside support for the film. He feels the film needs to be nurtured. It should be given special care and time to grow,” she said.

Aamir liked the poster of the film. In fact it was on his suggestion that the makers retained the old poster.

Kiran also clarified she has not turned producer and is not considering launching her own banner.

“I am a presenter, have given my support for this film. I have not turned producer with this film. Also I am not looking at having my own banner, I would not part way from Aamir Khan Productions, and will direct films for them. I don’t have plans to turn a producer as of now,” she said.

Kiran has come up with a unique strategy to promote the film as she would be promoting it online and not on television. She feels the digital medium holds the key to the future and is the right way to go forward.

“The digital…online medium is growing. The film needs to grow with time. We are not aiming to have a direct competition with big blockbusters. We have specific plans for marketing it online, which is a better way,” Kiran said.

The film that has been to several festival circuits will release in India on July 19.

“I am happy that Kiran Rao has come on board for this film. It feels good when filmmakers like Anurag Kashyap praise your work,” director Anand Gandhi said.

‘Ship of Theseus’ explores questions of identity, justice, beauty, meaning and death through the stories of an experimental photographer, an ailing monk and an enterprising stockbroker.

“The film raises questions and also somewhere gives answers to things that we want to know,” said Gandhi, who has been a writer of popular TV shows ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’ and ‘Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki’.

You are making a foray into acting with Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. Do you have any kind of formal training?
When I was very young, I was into dancing; I did ballroom dancing, went for championship and won loads of trophies. But I had to stop as it got too expensive—we had to buy gowns worth thousands of dollars apart from other things. But I loved dancing and had experimented with various forms. I also did several homemade movies by the age of 12 and wrote scripts for those. After 17, I did full-time acting in Melbourne for some time.

What brought you to India?
I first came to India on a backpacking trip way back in 2007 and travelled to Rajasthan, Kerala, Goa, Delhi, Agra, Chennai, and the Himalayas. When I used to stand in my balcony and look at the hills, the beauty of it fascinated me. I was a hippie. It was during this time I watched my Indian film, Om Shanti Om.

Did you have any idea about the lead actor who worked in that film?
Not really, I just remember walking into the theatre. It was while travelling afterwards that I asked some people about Shah Rukh Khan and I was surprised to know the kind of euphoria that surrounds him. People would call him King Khan, he was a God-like figure to most.

Tell us your experience working with the Deol family.
I find Sunny’s shyness cute. He is such a big guy and with the kind of films he has done, he has this image of a real tough guy—but he is so soft-spoken and shy! And when he is doing a romantic scene, this very thing works towards his advantage. Even Dharamji is so nice. On the first day of the shoot, he came to me and put his hand on my head and said: “Don’t worry, you are a star.” The gesture immediately made me feel comfortable.

What according to you would be the biggest hurdle for you in this industry?
Honestly, the biggest hurdle is to convince people to look past what they think. A lot of them refused to meet me, thinking I was no good since I don’t know Hindi. I totally get that, but when I got a chance I proved myself. Guess what, I have done my own dubbing in YPD2.

Following news of actor Vindu Dara Singh’s association in the recent spot-fixing scandal of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Deepika says it is sad how because of a few people, several others come in the ambit of doubt.

“It gives a bad name to the sport. It is unfair just because of a few people following this malpractice, you start doubting everybody else. As a country if you want to shine or if you want to be on the same level economically or otherwise (with others), I think it’s important that sports people in our country do really well and this (spot-fixing) is not really helping that,” Deepika told reporters at an event.

“It’s sad. I have grown up in a generation where I have seen my father (play), and sport at that time was so pure and clean. So, to see it go down this route is very disappointing,” she added.

Calling the spot-fixing scandal “shameful”, Deepika’s “Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani” co-star Ranbir Kapoor said: “IPL has become such a great entertaining platform for the world right now and when such things crop up- like people playing dirty, it’s unfortunate.”

“There is no justification to it and I hope people who are concerned in this mischief should be punished. It is not fair to the people who are playing the sport with the right intention,” he added.
